Pros
Popularity
Because Twitter enjoys the most users of any micro-blogging service, it is the most well-known. Therefore, many tools have been developed to work in conjunction with Twitter, including search engines and mobile applications.
Cons
Infrastructure
The swell of traffic Twitter has seen has put a great strain on their systems to support so many users. This has resulted in a lot of down time, especially in June 2008. At times the site has been unavailable, and embedded user feeds on third-party sites have been inoperable.
Can't embed multiple users
Twitter offers badges and code to embed your Twitter updates into another website, including blogs and social networks, but the Javascript code only supports one user. If you want to include different users' Twitter feeds on the same webpage, you'll have to find code produced by another source.
Third-party developments for Twitter
- Summize, now located at search.twitter.com, is a search engine for Twitter tweets.
- Quotably lets users type in a Twitter username and follow conversations that user is having with others. They also have a list of what is popular on Twitter right now.
- TweetBeep is like Google Alerts for Twitter updates. Sign up and you can receive an e-mail whenever a Twitter user mentions something of interest to you.
- Twitter Grader provides a ranking of your Twitter page. You can also view the top Twitterers.
